LAMP’s involvement in Delhi

During the reporting year, LAMP has launched the programmes for promotion of women self help groups in slums on the banks of Jamuna river. 45 Women Self-Help Groups have been already formed and the SHG members have been provided with support for developing management of thrift savings and micro credit programmes. Awareness generation and education programmes on Maleria and TB control, HIV, AIDS, STDs have also been organised in collaboration with All India Association of Voluntary Agencies(AIAVA).
During the reporting year, LAMP has undertaken all necessary steps for organising vocational skill development training programmes for the street and working children on different trades with the support of the AIAVA. It is also expected that the financial support will be available from a foundation of the Netherlands to undertake skill development and income generation programmes among the street children of Delhi.

ACTIVITIES IMPLEMENTED IN DELHI BY LAMP

A Vocational Training cum Servicing along with Support Services on different trades for the elderly children at risks and their parents living in slums and squatters of the National Capital Territory of Delhi State :

1. Air-conditioning, Refrigeration and other cooling systems Trade:
LAMP has taken a shop on rent at Mangal Bazar, Laxmi Nagar,Delhi-92. This is a developing area, and mainly middle-class persons are living in this area. There are at least 10 per cent people, who use Air-conditioners and almost all the families are having one/ two fridge, 3 or 4 coolers. Moreover, there are offices of M.N.Cs., Bank, Nursing Home etc. LAMP has engaged a trained teacher from I.T.I. and five children at risks from J.J. Clusters- Rani Garden and Thokar No. 8 are getting training of Repairing and servicing of Air-conditioners, Refrigeration system and other cooling systems.
2. Plumbing Work Trade:
LAMP has hired a shop in J.J. cluster in Thokar No. 8,Vikas Marg, Delhi-110092. In this area, there is no supply of MCD Water, so they use drinking water from van and for other purposes they use hand pump water. The work of plumber is required more in this area. The plumbing trainer has been providing training to four elderly children at risks and undertaking servicing work in the area.
3. Screen Printing Trade:
LAMP has started the training of Screen Printing in its Delhi office itself. This screen printing course has three street children . The trainer is very much committed to give them training and help to bring the orders from our surrounding areas. We also give them work of our office printing requirements.
4. Auto-Rickshaw( Three wheelers) and Motor Cycles/Scooters(Two-wheelers) trade:
In course of LAMP’s training and other financial support services nine fathers of children at risks/youth at risks have been successful to start their repairing garages in Rani Garden, Geeta Colony, Khureji Road areas. Each of these repairing workshop owners are now providing training to nine elderly children at risks, ( one at each workshop ) on three wheelers and two wheelers repairing work.
5. Tailoring, Knitting and Embroidery Trades:
In course of LAMP’s training and other financial support services seven mothers of children at risks/ youth at risks have been successful to start their shops/workshops in Thokkar No. 8, Rani Garden and Geeta Colony areas. Each of these shop/workshop owners are now providing training to fourteen elderly girl children at risks, ( two girl children at each shop/workshop ) on tailoring, knitting and embroidery works.
6. Leather Wrist Watch Strap Trade:
In course of LAMP’s training and other financial support services two mothers of children at risks/youth at risks have been successful to start their wrist watch leather strap making workshops( Two) in Rani Garden area. These Four workshop owners are now providing training to four other elderly girl children at risks, ( two girl children at each shop/workshop ) on leather wrist watch strap making works.
7. Radio, Transistor and other electronic goods repairing trade:
In course of LAMP’s training and other financial support services four fathers of children at risks/youth at risks have been successful to start their Radio, Transistor and other electronic goods repairing workshops in Thokkar No. 8, Laxmi Nagar, and Rani Garden areas. These repairing workshop owners are now providing training to five other elderly children at risks, on Radio, Transistor and other electronic goods repairing works.
8. Candle , Soft Toys, Paintings, Designer pot, Mirror Decoration and Sculptures making:
In this multipurpose unit, run at the LAMP’s Delhi office, the Art & Craft Instructors give the vocational training on many items. In this unit the girls and boys do not come in the group. They joined us individually and get training on different types of courses. They use their own materials to learn & practice. After training, two street youths( one boy and one girl) named Alokesh Shah & Indira Yadav. have started their own businesses. LAMP has also organized an exhibition of their creative art works in our office. The people of our surrounding areas appreciated the work of LAMP’s vocational training programme.
9. Handmade Paper:
Delhi City Development Authority through a NGO-All India Centre for Urban and Rural Development (AICURD) undertook Waste materials recycling programme few years back as a part of the Yamuna Action Plan and production of hand made paper and polythene mats and Compost fertilizers were planned to be produced through recycling waste materials. As the responsible NGO-AICURD could not continue the said activities, LAMP has got all those machines from that NGO, free of cost, for producing handmade papers, polythene mats and compost fertiliser at Bhilswa resettlement colonies in the North of Delhi. The Instructor of handmade paper have four street youths for training and four other street youths collect and get Rag papers & clothes from door to door to prepare the handmade paper. The waste is further used to prepare composed Fertilizer to use in Kitchen garden & in flower pot through gardeners. Besides, polythene mats are made through weaving machines. This programe is undertaken in collaboration with the All India Centre for Urban and Rural Development (AICURD).

In addition, LAMP has been supporting skills development and entrepreneurship development training to a few children/youth at risks in other trades like plastic goods manufacturing, welding, rickshaw repairing etc.
Besides, it should be mentioned here that 675( as on 31st March, 2012) persons in all, living in slums and squatters of Delhi ( Children/youth at risks and their family members ) have become the members of LAMP’s Micro Finance and Livelihood Development Programme. Out of these members, 433 ( as on 31st March, 2003) persons in all, living in slums and squatters of Delhi (Children/youth at risks and their family members ) have got technical support in the form of skills development and entrepreneurship development trainings and loan from the LAMP-Delhi State office.
Moreover, LAMP Placement Services has been started recently to make arrangements for getting placements for the trained elderly children/youth at risks and their family members.
